Atlantic salmon harvest increased 10% in 2019

Harvests of the Chilean aquaculture sector accumulated by December 2019 amounted to 1.3 million tons, 5.7% more than what was recorded on the same date of 2018.

Fish accounted for 72.5% of the total aquaculture production, while the contributions of molluscs and seaweed were 26.0% and 1.5%, respectively, according to the Annual Sectorial Report on Fisheries and Aquaculture published by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca).



Total fish harvests accumulated until December 2019 reached 953 300 tons, 13.1% higher than the volume recorded in the same period of 2018. Atlantic salmon accounted for 73.2% of farmed salmon production, while Pacific salmon and trout accounted for 18.5% and 8.3%, respectively.

The Atlantic salmon harvest accumulated until December was 697 400 tons, 10.1% more compared to the same date of the previous year. The resource was harvested mainly in the regions of Aysén and Los Lagos, with 375 800 tons and 224 200 tons, respectively.

Atlantic salmon accounted for 53.0% of the total national aquaculture production.

The accumulated rainbow trout harves as of December 2019 was 79,500 tons, representing an increase of 10.3% year-on-year. The main productive regions were Aysén and Los Lagos, with 49.2% and 31.4%, respectively.



Rainbow trout accounted for 6.0% of the country’s total of aquaculture production.

The Pacific salmon harvest accumulated until December 2019 was 176 400 tons, 28.4% more than the same date of the previous year. The resource was harvested mainly in the Los Lagos Region (66.9%), followed by Aysén (32.6%).

Pacific salmon accounted for 13.4% of the national total aquaculture production.

Scallop harvests accumulated as of December amounted to 6500 tons,  down 15.4% year-on-year.

 

As for seaweed, the accumulated harvest by December reached 19 600 tons, 7.2% lower compared to the same date of 2018. "Pelillo" seaweed (Gracilaria chilensis) represented 95.4% of the production, and was produced mainly in the Region of Los Lagos (85.3%), followed by Coquimbo (9.5%).

Farmed seaweed represented 1.5% of the total production of the Chilean aquaculture sector.
