SPRFMO: improved conditions for jack mackerel in the South Pacific

James Ianelli, president of the Scientific Committee of the regional organization, said that a management based on quotas has allowed an increase in the stock of this resource.

The president of the Regional Organization of Fisheries Management of the South Pacific (SPRFMO), James Ianelli, informed that the investigations of his institution show a recovery of the stock of jack mackerel in the South Pacific. This resource is mobilized, mainly, in the high seas off the coasts of Peru and Chile

"In recent years, thanks to quota-based management, there has been a recovery in the stock of jack mackerel. There is better recruitment, although the habitat of this species has changed, prefers certain temperatures and conditions that require better understanding, "explained the scientist during his presentation at the Conference on Marine Sustainability, organized by the National Fisheries Society (SNP).

In his presentation entitled "State of the fisheries resources of the high seas of the South East Pacific: Advances in research and management", Ianelli said that although the projections are good for jack mackerel, not necessarily the availability for fishing will be even in the whole region of this part of the continent. "The Peruvian zone is subject to greater climate variability compared to Chilean waters," he stated.

The specialist said that the monitoring work done in the ROFM makes it possible to identify the state of the areas where marine species develop, such as jack mackerel and giant squid, as well as its evolution over the years. In addition, they also take into account vulnerable marine ecosystems in order to create a list of priorities and assess sustainability for the purposes of the fishery.

In South America, this species is distributed from Ecuador to southern Chile (X Region of Los Lagos) and its presence is reported longitudinally to Tasmania. It is found up to 300 meters deep.

Giant squid

The scientist of the SPRFMO commented that the giant squid is a species that is characterized by a short life and whose population varies from one year to the next, creating a special challenge for the presentation of recommendations of fishing levels. "We have to create a programme to monitor these fisheries," he said.

The purpose of the Marine Sustainability Conference - SNP is to contribute to the strengthening of scientific and technical knowledge for the sustainability of resources, the care of the ecosystem and the development of fishing and aquaculture activities.
