Salmon harvests grew 6.5 per cent in 2018

The aquaculture harvests (preliminary) accumulated to December 2018 reached 1.24 million tons, 7.8 per cent more than what was recorded at the same date of 2017, informed the Subsecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SUBPESCA) in its latest Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector Report.
Fish contributed 67.7 per cent of total aquaculture, while molluscs and seaweed accounted for 30.6 per cent and 1.7 per cent, respectively.

The main resources corresponded to Atlantic salmon, mussel and Pacific salmon, which represented 50.9 per cent, 29.6 per cent and 11.0 per cent of production, respectively, and together they constituted 91.5 per cent of the total harvested products.
The main regions where harvests were registered corresponded to the Regions of Los Lagos and Aysén of General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, with 808,000 tonnes (64.9 per cent) and 348,000 tonnes (28.0 per cent), respectively, which add up to 92.9 per cent of the country.

The total fish harvest accumulated up to December 2018 reached 843,000 tonnes (67.7 per cent of the total), 6.5 per cent higher than that recorded in the same period of 2017, but lower than the 17 per cent annual increase in farmed fish between 2017 and 2016.
Atlantic salmon accounted for 75 per cent of salmon farming, while Pacific salmon and rainbow trout represented 16.3 per cent and 8.8 per cent, respectively.
As of December 2018, the accumulated harvest of Atlantic salmon reached 633,000 tonnes, 8.6 per cent more than in the same date of 2017, but inferior to the increase of 15.2 per cent per year registered between 2017 and 2016 for this species.

Atlantic salmon accounted for 50.9 per cent of the total national aquaculture harvests last year.
The harvests of rainbow trout reached 72,000 tonnes, 2.9 per cent less compared to the same date of 2017, year when their production increased by 4.1 per cent annually compared to 2016.
During 2018, the rainbow trout represented 5.8 per cent of the national total of harvests and 8.6 per cent of the salmon farming.

Cumulative harvest levels of Pacific salmon to December 2018 reached 137,000 tonnes, 2.2 per cent more than in the same date of 2017, but lower than the annual growth rate of 35 per cent observed in this species between the years 2017 and 2016.
Pacific salmon accounted for 11.0 per cent of the total national harvest and 16.3 per cent of salmon farming.
Regarding the availability of eggs, SUBPESCA report reveals that the cumulative production to December 2018 was 666.2 million eggs, 3.7 per cent higher than in the same date of 2017.

The proportion of egg production per species was 2018 of 58.4 per cent of Atlantic salmon, 21.9 per cent of Pacific salmon and 19.7 per cent of rainbow trout.
As of December 2018, 12.3 million eggs were imported, while on the same date in 2017, 7.5 million eggs were imported, all of Atlantic salmon from Iceland.
The harvests of molluscs accumulated to December 2018 reached 380,200 tonnes, 9.9 per cent higher compared to the same date in 2017, but lower than the annual increase of 20 per cent observed between the years 2017 and 2016.

Last year, mollusc harvests represented 30.6 per cent of the national total of aquaculture harvests.
