Galicia helps Namibia to improve fisheries research

The Technological Centre of Marine Affairs (Cetmar) is collaborating with the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources of Namibia in a project aimed at improving the research and evaluation of the fishing resources of the African country.

The initiative, funded by the Secretariat of Marine Affairs of ​​Galicia of Xunta de Galicia, has the technical support of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO).

One of the objectives of this new project is the promotion of talks between the scientific community and the fisheries sector on issues of mutual interest and that result in the improvement of the evaluation of fishery resources. In order to achieve this goal, a series of workshops is scheduled to serve as a platform for meeting and discussing these common issues and will be developed over the next three years.

The first of these workshops, organized by CETMAR Foundation, took place on Monday at the headquarters of the National Marine Information and Research Centre (NatMIRC) in Swakopmund, with the aim of improving the management of hake in Namibia by entering the longline data in the evaluation model.

With the performance of this new project, CETMAR resumes its collaboration with the Government of Namibia, with which it has already worked since 2008 in different projects also related to strengthening the capacity of its National Centre for Marine Research and Information in relation to the fisheries management and with the collaboration of Spanish Cooperation.

The current project is part of the memorandum of understanding signed between Xunta de Galicia and the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources of the Government of Namibia.
