Lerøy Midt AS has unfortunately discovered a net damage at the Naustneset aquaculture site in Tingvollfjorden in Gjemnes municipality, on Tuesday 27 February.

"We have quickly mobilized additional resources to repair the damage to the channel and capture as much as possible of the escaped fish. We maintain a close dialogue with relevant authorities and actors, including the Directorate of Fisheries, and work closely with them to handle the situation in the most efficient way possible", says Harald Larssen, general manager of Lerøy Midt.

"Our emergency plan was immediately implemented. 1,200 meters of recapture nets have been set out within the area we have permission for, and we are now waiting for the go-ahead from the State Administrator so that we can quickly implement recapture in a larger area", says Larssen.

"We have agreements with local fishermen from whom we have asked for assistance. We give a bounty of NOK 350 (USD 33.11) per fish that are delivered to us at the land base of the locality. We ask that those who wish to keep the fish themselves let us know how much fish has been caught. It is very important that those who wish to fish for the escaped fish comply with the rules for fishing in the area and find out about any changes."

The seine was in the process of being slaughtered and we requested extra well boat capacity so that during the night we emptied the relevant seine of remaining fish. On the basis of this, we can estimate a preliminary escape range of 5,000 salmon. The salmon is approx. 6 kg.

"We deeply regret the incident. We have a vision of zero escapes, and take this very seriously. Lerøy has its own environmental and safety group which has now started work to find the cause of the escape. Our priority is to limit the extent of the damage and learn from the incident to avoid future escapes", concludes Larssen.
