The BioBio Commission for Environmental Evaluation this week approved the first salmon farming project in the region, which will be developed in the commune of Talcahuano.
This is the Bordemar-Tumbes project, which foresees the installation of 51 ponds for the rearing and fattening of salmon in the Tumbes peninsula, with an investment of nearly USD 45 million.
Access and area where the RAS will be installed.
According to the legal representative of Bordemar-Tumbes, Pablo Andrés Cabello Medina, the objective is to be able to produce 4,000 tons of salmon per year.
For the breeding process, 10 tanks of 42 m3 and eight of 10.5 m3 will be installed, while for fattening another 21 ponds of 905 m3 and 12 of 225 m3 will be installed, Diario Concepción reported.
"The process of incubation at first feeding will be done within the breeding facilities, in a separate and isolated room using compact modules and trays of first feeding", detailed Cabello in the report delivered to the Service of Environmental Evaluation, SEA Bío Bío.
"By having the three productive processes under closed and isolated facilities, control of all aspects of biosecurity and production is ensured in order to keep infectious vectors out of the facilities," he explained.
In addition, Cabello stressed that the main characteristic of this concept design of fish farming is the fact of recirculating a high percentage of water (99.8 per cent) used in the process.
