Russia and Mauritania intend to develop cooperation in the field of fisheries

The head of the Federal Fisheries Agency, Ilya Shestakov, met with the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Deman Hamar, in Moscow.

A long-term partnership in the field of fisheries has developed between Russia and Mauritania: an intergovernmental agreement was signed in 2003. During bilateral and multilateral events, countries regularly confirm their intention to develop mutually beneficial partnerships in various areas of the fishing industry.

Ilya Shestakov noted that one of the priority areas of cooperation is scientific and technical interaction, strengthening ties between the Atlantic branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “VNIRO” and the Mauritanian Institute of Oceanographic Research and Fisheries.

The head of Rosrybolovstvo emphasized the importance of the Great African Expedition, which starts in 2024. As part of the expedition, a complex of large-scale research work is planned in the exclusive economic zones of a number of countries in West Africa and the western Indian Ocean. The waters of Mauritania are included in the list of study areas.

Deman Hamar expressed confidence that the Great African Expedition will help strengthen cooperation between states in the field of fisheries, deepen the exchange of scientific experience, and will also become the basis for the development of cooperation in the field of preserving aquatic biological resources in African waters.

At the end of the meeting, Ilya Shestakov invited the Mauritanian partners to the VII International Fishery Forum and the Exhibition of the Fishing Industry, Seafood and Technologies, which will take place on September 17-19 in St. Petersburg.
