Peru Reaffirms Regional Leadership in Sustainable Fishing at ALPESCAS Meeting

With a strong commitment to promoting the sustainable development of the fishing industry in the region, the Minister of Production, Sergio González, participated in the 10th Meeting of the Latin American Alliance for Sustainable Fishing and Food Security (ALPESCAS), which brings together chambers and associations of the fishing industry in Latin America.

During his address, the head of PRODUCE highlighted the key role played by the Peruvian fishing sector in the national economy. "The Peruvian fishing industry has been jointly contributing to the country's development. By the end of 2024, the sector contributed 4 billion soles to GDP, equivalent to 0.8% of the national total, generating approximately 400,000 jobs and exporting more than $3.6 billion, representing 7% of Peru's total exports," stated Minister González.

ALPESCAS is presented as a business alliance of the Latin American fishing industry, seeking to strengthen cooperation between industry associations to promote food security, competitiveness, and social, environmental, and economic responsibility, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Its main strategic axes include sustainability, fisheries certification, the circular economy, and the promotion of a sustainable food industry that contributes to productive linkages and employability in member countries.

The ceremony was attended by prominent industry officials, including Jessica Luna, President of the National Fisheries Society; Osciel Velásquez, President of ALPESCAS; Raquel Soto Torres, Vice Minister of Strategic Development of Natural Resources of the Ministry of the Environment; Alfonso Miranda Eyzaguirre, President of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Committee of the National Society of Industries; and Mariana Escobar, FAO Representative in Peru, among other authorities.
