The capture activity in the fishing sector registered an increase of 101.01 per cent in April compared to the same month of 2016, accumulating 11 months of running growth, according to the Production Ministry (PRODUCE).
PRODUCE explained that these positive figures are mainly supported by the increase in the anchovy landing intended for indirect human consumption, which grew by 1860 per cent in that month, as a result of the opening of the first 2017 season in the northern-central zone.
It also highlighted the increase in hydrobiological resource production destined to the frozen industry, influenced by the increase in the landing of giant squid, prawn, hake and mackerel, among other species.
"This was due to the favorable oceanographic conditions for a greater availability of these species," ministerial officials said.
According to official statistics, the volume of the landed hydrobiological resources landed in April reached a total of 480,913 tonnes, compared to the 106,812 tonnes in April 2016, representing an increase of 350.25 per cent.
PRODUCE indicated that this increase was mainly due to the higher landings for the indirect human consumption (fishmeal-fish oil) industry as well as for the frozen industry, whose volumes were higher in tonnes (1,860 per cent) and in 14,959 tonnes (45.9 per cent), respectively.
