The fishery for Copper River king salmon opened in Alaska on Thursday and the first shipment of fish arrived with much fanfare at Sea-Tac Airport, Washington, Friday morning.
Fish market fishermen's terminal sources pointed out that fishing vessels caught very few fish because of the very cold water temperatures, which could lead to a hike in prices, as high as USD 60/pound.
Fewer king salmon available in the North Pacific also keep the price of Copper River king high.
Three more Alaska Airlines flights were inbound from Cordova, Alaska, delivering an additional 48,000 pounds of salmon to the market, where it will then be delivered to restaurants and grocery stores across the country.
That first fish, donated by Trident Seafoods, became the main ingredient in the annual cook off to celebrate the kickoff of the salmon grilling season.
