Teams from the Maritime Governorship of Valdivia and SERNAPESCA Los Rios Region carried out an intense joint operation on Thursday, which concluded with the seizure of 3.1 tonnes of Pacific pomfret on board two vessels that operated illegally.
This result is the consequence of the control strengthening carried out by the Maritime and SERNAPESCA Authority in fishing areas in order to halt and discourage the actions of those who illegally capture fishery resources.
The discovery in Los Ríos was made thanks to an important deployment by the Maritime Authority, which included overflights through the fishing area in which, according to the reports received, illegal extraction is practised. Once the ships that carried out the illegal extraction were detected, a patrol was carried out by sea aboard the LSG Corral.
SERNAPESCA national director Alicia Gallardo said that during this operation they were able to detect two ships, one of which had no authorization to fish for southern ray's bream and the other, which came from another fishing area, Los Lagos. "We were able to detect illegal fishing and it is a dissuasive action for the rest of the fishermen or ships that may continue to exercise an illegal operation in the Pacific pomfret (Brama australis) resource and other resources," she said.
The fishing authority also stressed that this result is part of the program to combat illegal fishing led by SERNAPESCA together with the Navy as supervising entities.

"Within the fight against illegal fishing, one of the key points is the reinforced control in fishing areas, which is one of the links in the value chain that we are addressing today through collaborative work with the Maritime Authority", said Gallardo. She added that the objective is to protect those fishing actors that operate under the law, deter illegal fishing and thus contribute to the conservation and sustainability of fishing resources.
The first vessel, Don Felix II, was detected 60 miles southwest of Corral and 3.1 tonnes of Pacific pomfret were found inside it, a resource that is not registered or authorized for capture.
The second boat, Don Carlin I, maintained its registration in Los Lagos Region, for which reason an infringement was filed for not respecting the fishing area. This ship was carrying 2 tonnes of Pacific pomfret.
