In the Far East fisheries basin, pelagic fishing facilities such as sardines, Iwashi and mackerel are successfully fishing.

By June 30, fishery producers had already produced 34 thousand tons, which is 29.5 thousand tons or 7.7 times higher than the level of 2019. Last year, such massive catches were received only in the autumn period.

The main share of the catch is occupied by sardine Iwashi - 21.14 thousand tons, which is 18.12 thousand tons more than last year, the volume of mackerel production is 12.76 thousand tons, in 2019 only 0.6 was mastered on the same date thousand tons. At the same time, fishery carried out fishing for mackerel mainly in the exclusive economic zone of Japan (2020 - 12.4 thousand tons, 2019 - 0.00 tons). Saury is not yet caught.

Over the past week, 13 Russian fishing vessels of the enterprises of the Primorsky, Kamchatka and Khabarovsk Territories, as well as the Sakhalin Region, have fished for pelagic fish in the northwestern Pacific Ocean (NWTO), in the South Kuril expedition.

The Far Eastern sardine, or Iwashi , ( lat.  Sardinops melanostictus ) is a marine fish of the genus Sardinops ( Sardinops ). The trade name "Iwashi herring" was given to this fish due to the outward resemblance to herring and its Japanese name "ma-iwashi"

The recommended catch in the exclusive economic zone of Russia for 2020 for sardines is set at 235 thousand tons, for mackerel - 240 thousand tons, saury - 136 thousand tons.

According to TINRO, the early approaches of sardines and mackerels to the exclusive economic zone of Russia are due to the increased rate of spring heating of the water. Due to the significant increase in the number of these fish in recent years and the emergence of productive generations, volumes exceeding the levels of the last three years are forecasted. The 2020 harvest will include the productive generation of mackerel born in 2018. This will provide high catches of medium sized fish.

The level of iwashi sardine reserves allows us to predict good approaches in the Russian EEZ in summer and autumn, and the formation of fishing clusters in the South and Middle Kuril Islands. In July, Iwashi and mackerel will spread to an even larger area - with the heating of the waters they enter the more northern areas. During the period of maximum surface heating in the South Kuril zone (August-September), sardine and mackerel diverge throughout the area. However, they form the most dense clusters south, southeast and east of Iturup Island in the frontal zones of the first Kuroshio branch.According to the forecast, in the first ten days of November, mackerel accumulations will begin to go to the Japanese EEZ, where fishing will continue.

Currently excellent preserves are produced in Russia in different presentations for the domestic market

The maximum catch of sardines on the ship will be observed in August and in the first half of September. In October, the efficiency of the sardine fishery will decrease due to surface cooling and the departure of major accumulations to warmer waters outside the Russian economic zone.

Recall that the sardine Iwashi returned to the shores of the Russian Far East after a 25-year break. Fishing for this fish, popular in Soviet times, began to revive in 2016. Rosrybolovstvo, together with science and the fishing industry, did a great job to organize the extraction of Iwashi, since both the gear and fishing technology were almost forgotten. In 1970-80 the Soviet fleet mined up to 1 million tons of ivasi.

At the end of 2019, 133 thousand tons of Iwashi sardine were mined, more than 2 times higher than the level of 2018, the catch of mackerel amounted to 86.41 thousand tons, or 87.46% of the level of 2018 (98.8 thousand tons)
