The Water Resources Authority of Panama (ARAP) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Stakeholders Committee to have access to the Certification of Responsible Fisheries for the small pelagic sardine/anchovy, herring and Pacific bumper, in the Pacific territorial waters of Panama.
ARAP administrator Zuleika Pinzón recalled that the Action Plan for Sustainable Fisheries seeks to optimize the productivity and competitiveness of the market.
Through this agreement, both parties commit themselves to joining efforts and reviewing annually the information resulting from both the hydroacoustic assessment and the calculation of the maximum allowable catch (MAC).
For its part, the so-called Stakeholder Committee is committed to continuing joining forces and annually carrying out a hydroacoustic assessment of small pelagic resources in the Gulf of Panama. Subsequently, based on the results of the hydroacoustic evaluation and using recognized mathematical models, it will estimate the minimum and maximum ranges of the MAC for anchovy and herring.
