Bloomberg exposes in an article that the desert kingdom of Saudi Arabia, long synonymous with its oil wealth, may soon produce and export a less likely commodity: farm-raised salmon.

Vikings Label FZC, a Dubai (UAE) based company majority-owned by Norwegian investors, is planning to set up the country’s first salmon farming-project with an aim to supply Saudi consumers with as much as 5,000 tons of the cold-water fish each year by 2023. The facility will cost about USD 90 million, and the company is seeking USD 25 million of that from investors, Chief Executive Officer Lukas Havn said in an interview.

So far, one Saudi investor -- Hani Al-Saleh, CEO of transportation services company Arabian Hala Co.Ltd -- has pledged funds to the project, Havn said. Vikings Label is also in talks with Saudi banks and the Saudi Industrial Development Fund.

Seafood companies like Vikings Label see growth opportunities in Saudi Arabia, which is increasingly promoting healthy lifestyles and eating habits as part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s broader strategy to overhaul the economy and transform society. Aquaculture is one of the businesses where Saudi officials hope to attract investment. Vikings Label would be the country’s first salmon farm, according to the government’s National Fisheries Development Program.

The company hopes to start building fish tanks and other aquaculture facilities north of the Red Sea city of Jeddah in the first quarter of next year, Havn said. “The farm will be built in a way that’s expandable, so production can reach up to 10,000 tons,” he said. “We could export to countries around the kingdom.”

Vikings Label RAS project

Saudi authorities want to almost double per capita fish consumption in the country to 13 kilograms (29 pounds) by the end of 2020 and to 22 kilograms -- the global average -- by 2030. That’s an ambitious target for a nation where lamb dominates palates, and heart ailments and diabetes are common.

Vikings Label already partnering the danish company Gråkjær for a salmon project in Dubai (UAE)

Gråkjær will supply the design, plan the project and take charge of the construction of Vikings Label’s future land-based fish farms. The facility will contain a hatchery, first feeding, fry, a pre-smolt unit, a smolt and post-smolt unit, and a delivery tank. The site will have the capacity to produce 2,500 tons of salmon a year, the company said.

The Dubai project is expected to be completed by 2020.

Vikings Label is owned by Tore Havn and Terje Lukas Havn, who have years of experience in the fields of fish farming, production, trading and export in the aquaculture sector.

For more than 40 years Gråkjær has been working on turnkey contracts in the field of construction for agriculture and business – and now in the field of land-based fish farms too. They have been responsible for something like 4,000 construction projects.
