Supermarket giants Netherlands-based Ahold and Belgium-based Delhaize have admitted to have started holding preliminary discussions on a likely merger intended to create a worlwide retailer with a strong presence in the United States (US), where it could be placed among the five biggest ones. Both group's aim is to increase their buying power and achieve a better position in the market over its main competitors.
It has been estimated the new joint retailer will be worth around EUR 23 billion, with sales amounting to EUR 61.5 billion from 6,600 stores, Reuters reported.
