Fishing interests protected at quota talks in Brussels

Negotiations on fishing quotas for 2011 between European Union (EU) fisheries ministers have finalised in Brussels on a successful note for Ireland. Certain strict measures proposed by the European Commission (EC) before the talks began have been averted, according to representatives from the Irish fishing industry.
In advance of the negotiations, the EC had propositioned reductions in quotas for numerous of the species targeted by Irish fishers and cutting down the days allowed at sea off the southeast coast.
The Irish fishing industry as a whole was up against a 22 per cent decrease in its quota, but the negotiations ended with only a reduction of 0.9 per cent.
