Yuken SA is an Argentine company that begun as a joint venture in 2000 and was purchased completely by Sealord in 2009. Our commercial offices are in Buenos Aires and our fishing boat operation takes place at Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. Fish caught in the cold, unpolluted South Atlantic waters include Hoki, Hubbsi Hake, Southern Hake, Southern Blue Whiting and Silver Warehou.
Created in 2000, Yuken took its name from the language of the Alakaluf people, an ancient tribe from Tierra del Fuego island; its meaning has become the company’s work philosophy: “let’s walk together holding hands”.
More than 210 employees and two freezer trawlers catch hoki and hubbsi hake and both are involved with an annual 75 days biological stop. This is part of a government requirement to manage the catch effort in the Hubbsi Hake fishery. A quota management system, similar to New Zealand’s, is also in place for Hubbsi Hake, Hoki , Southern Blue Whiting and Patagonian Toothfish.
