The work of Russian fish trading companies is largely dependent on the resumption of supplies to China. If this does not happen in the next two weeks, companies will have to look for other routes of sale, said on Friday the deputy director of the Federal Fisheries Agency, Vasily Sokolov, during a press conference at an international scientific conference on salmon.

"We are willing to resume the supply of fish to China at any time, in a few days the celebration of the Chinese New Year ends, we hope this will give some reactivation. If the ports are opened, everything will be fine. If the ports do not open in the next week or two, this will mean a long-term trend, and the company will definitely have to look for definitely different forms of marketing,” Sokolov said.

He said that China's challenge brought significant difficulties, but Russia sees this as an opportunity to focus on working in the country.

“China was closed not only for Russia. You have to understand that all countries fall under this. Chinese ports are closed to frozen fish not only in our country, but also in Vietnam, Korea and others. This is not a specific measure for Russia. We do not consider this as a deliberate desire to reduce the price of haddock,” Sokolov added.

China accounted for about 70% of total Russian exports of fish, seafood products and shellfish.

At the end of September last year, the Rosselkhoznadzor received several official notifications from China that traces of coronavirus infection were found in Russian seafood packages. Because of this, China limited the importation of fish products, and then the Chinese side tightened quarantine measures and the only open Chinese port stopped accepting export cargo.

In this situation, Yuri Trutnev, Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Russian Federation - Presidential Plenipotentiary in the Far Eastern Federal District, commissioned the resolution of the issue of increasing the volume of processing of fish products by Far Eastern companies.
