Chubut Moves Towards Shrimp Certification

It will create a monitoring commission to seek to pave the way towards the certification of the fishery in provincial waters. The process is in its final stages and the measure was evaluated by CeDePesca. After each season there will be a technical report of the observer program on board.

In March, the Sustainable Fisheries Development Center (CeDePesca) announced the 'full evaluation' process, under the sustainable standard of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), of the coastal (onshore) fishery of the species Pleoticus gallinari in the jurisdictional waters of Chubut.

Within this framework, the creation of a Monitoring Commission for the shrimp fishery is planned, within the Ministry of Fisheries, and the establishment of explicit objectives for the management of the resource in provincial waters.

“The government of the province of Chubut, through its Fisheries Secretariat, modified Resolution No. 6 of 2019, which established the criteria for opening and closing the fishery, incorporating aspects that improve the regulations with a view to achieving certification. MSC”, highlighted CeDePesca.

Among the incorporations, the creation of a Monitoring Commission for the shrimp fishery stands out within the scope of the provincial Fisheries portfolio, “which will advise the Enforcement Authority in periods of no more than three years regarding the effectiveness of the measures. of management adopted and the convenience or not of introducing improvements in the regulations.

In this sense, the deputy executive director of CeDePesca, Gabriela McLean, highlighted that “what was ruled by the fishing authorities of Chubut is aligned with what CeDePesca promotes and results in an important improvement of the regulatory framework, especially because it explicitly establishes the management objectives. short and long term, including ecosystem objectives.”

In addition, McLean mentioned the incorporation of an article that requires the submission of technical reports from the provincial Observer Program at the end of each shrimp fishing season.

It should be remembered that during the previous administrations, the by-catch rates of hake in the shrimp fishery in Chubut were systematically hidden, despite different claims made by INIDEP.

For his part, the Secretary of Fisheries of the province of Chubut, Andrés Arbeletche, described the beginning of the certification process for the fishery in provincial waters as “good news,” although he assured that he was not surprised. “From the first day we took office we started working with the people of CeDePesca to advance the process,” he said.

It is worth remembering that in December 2017, a Collaboration Agreement was signed between the Chubut Fisheries Secretariat and CeDePesca, in order to advance actions aimed at improving the performance of the fishery. As a result of said agreement, Resolution No. 6/2019 was approved, which represented an important step towards achieving certification.

Arbeletche added that “we are happy to enter the last stage; We have to be cautious, although if we achieve certification in the future it will allow us to enter other markets and be more competitive.”
