Canfisco restructures operations and stops producing canned salmon

Canfisco will close its salmon canning operations as part of a restructuring plan of its Oceanside Plant in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. The decision, partly taken as a consequence of the fall in canned salmon demand, will imply the loss of a considerable number of jobs.
Executives from the firm consider the need to restructure operations arises from several factors, among which they mention the salmon low abundance in the region, the competition with plants in Alaska, which have lower labour costs and reduced access from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), which have cut back the production rate, The Northern View reported.
