Deadline Approaching: The Nor-Fishing Foundation Innovation Prize 2014

The Nor-Fishing Foundation Innovation Award for 2014 is this year devoted to the fisheries industry. The award is given for a product, process, or other specific initiative that creates innovation and efficiency improvements. Increased profitability and safety, improved marine environment and improved quality of marine raw materials are also important aspects.
Chairman of the Board of the Nor-Fishing Foundation, Mrs. Liv Holmefjord, explains that for a number of years the Foundation has presented an Innovation Award at both the Aqua Nor and Nor-Fishing exhibitions. At Nor-Fishing 2014 this tradition will continue. Mrs. Holmefjord encourages everybody involved in development projects to submit their application by the 1st of June 2014.

Managing Director Ola Eriksen and Project Manager Kari Steinsbø point to the fact that the award consists of NOK 100,000 (USD 16,500) plus a diploma. The award has served as a major encouragement to research and development in the fisheries and aquaculture industries over the years.
In 2013, 19 applicants from a number of countries submitted their projects, and the winner was Beck Engineering AS of Oslo. They received the award for their system of optical removal of salmon lice. Managing Director Arne Breivik of Beck Engineering says that the award has brought the company widespread attention and an understanding of optical de-lousing of salmon as a sustainable method for solving the salmon lice problem.

The award has stimulated to further research and development. Recruitment of new and very capable personnel and the development of the company has been especially encouraging after Aqua Nor 2013, says Mr. Breivik. The employees are proud of last year’s Innovation Award and consider it an important recognition of their efforts.

Both Norwegian and foreign equipment and service producers, active practitioners in the industry, handling and processing and others can apply. The proposed project, which in 2014 should be related to the fisheries industry, must have been developed after the Nor-Fishing exhibition in 2012. It is not a condition that the applicant is an exhibitor at Nor-Fishing 2014. It is also possible to nominate others for the award.

The application deadline is on 1st June 2014. The Jury will review all applications received immediately after the deadline. By the end of June, three finalists will be announced, and the final decision will be made by the Board of Directors of the Nor-Fishing Foundation in August 2014. The Innovation Award will be presented to the winner during Nor-Fishing 2014.
