Leaders seek federal support to strengthen shrimp production
(BRAZIL, 2/17/2015)
The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Helder Barbalho, met last week in Brasilia with a committee to address public policies aimed at strengthening shrimp farming in Brazil.
The meeting was attended by the president of the Brazilian Association of Shrimp Farmers (ABCC), Itamar Rocha; businessman Carlos Bezerra, the post-larvae laboratory of marine shrimp Biomar; and representatives of the state of Rio Grande do Norte in Congress, such as Senator Garibaldi Alves and Congressman Walter Alves, among others.
"We have two priority demands. One is the issue of environmental licenses, which is the responsibility of the states. And the other is the funding," said Itamar Rocha, who expressed his confidence that the industry will greatly increase its productivity with the adoption of appropriate technologies.
The ABCC president also stressed the importance of technical assistance and marketing support.
In 2014, national shrimp production reached 90,000 tonnes, which went mostly addressed to the domestic market and generated BRL 2 billion (USD 704.7 million) in revenue in the supply chain, according to Rocha.
The shrimp farming industry, which today gathers 2,400 producers, mostly small farms, has plans to expand production to meet domestic and international markets. However, the sector needs support from the federal government, particularly to negotiate with other countries the elimination of duty barriers.
Ceara, the largest domestic producer of shrimp, aims to double production over the next five years. In addition, Rio Grande do Norte and other north-eastern states have similar plans.
Importantly, Brazil has focused its production on the vannamei shrimp, originating in the Pacific. This species is produced in inland areas, many in semi-arid regions, where the species has adapted well to oligohaline waters.
