Charges made against Salmones Antarctica for environmental breaches
(CHILE, 6/17/2015)
The Superintendency of the Environment (SMA) proceeded to file charges against Salmones Antartica SA due to a number of environmental breaches.
The lack of compliance was observed in the salmon fattening centres Punta Elisa and Punta Mano, located in the Aysen Region. These farms were audited during 2013 and 2014, respectively, said the SMA.
Under the work programme of the National Control Network (RENFA), led by the SMA in collaboration with the Maritime Authority of the Aysen Region and the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) some of the observed breaches were:
- Presence of rubbish and waste of the aquaculture activity on the surrounding beaches, sea surface and inside the space near the maritime concession granted to the salmon fattening centre of Punta Mano.
- The existence of five fish nets deposited on the benthic substrate (seabed) adjacent to Punta Elisa farming centre.
- Lack of the mandatory for transport, cleaning and disinfection of the nets in the farming centre Punta Elisa.
The indictment is the beginning of a sanction procedure by the SMA.
The offender has 10 days to file a Compliance Programme or 15 days to formulate rebuttals to this Superintendency, after which the sanction process continues.
