Sharp decline of shrimp industry in Rio Grande do Norte

Farmed shrimp production in Rio Grande do Norte fell 54.7 per cent in the last ten years as a result of various factors such as the crisis in the international market, viral diseases, natural disasters and excessive bureaucracy for the issue of environmental licenses.
The Brazilian Association of Shrimp Breeders (ABCC) recalled that at the beginning of the decade of the year 2000 this state in northeastern Brazil was a national leader in the production of shrimp in captivity.
In 2003, Rio Grande do Norte produced 37,400 tonnes of shrimp while in 2013 only 16,900 tonnes of the shellfish were harvested.
Meanwhile, in 2004 it exported some 21,100 tonnes to the United States, Europe and some Asian countries for USD 82.6 million. But in 2012, no shrimp was directly exported because of US and European crisis, Tribuna do Norte reported.
According to statistics from ABCC, while the shrimp industry of Rio Grande do Norte recedes, that of the neighbouring state of Ceará has taken the lead: the last decade it increased production from 25,915 tonnes to 33 949 tonnes, that is to say, 31 pr cent more.
For ABCC President, Itamar Rocha, the main reason for the decline of Rio Grande do Norte sector is "lack of support".
"The state of Rio Grande do Norte has potential, but it does not transform it into an opportunity," said the leader.
In addition, he acknowledged that entrepreneurs have also had to face a reduction in loan lines to expand the activity.
However, Banco del Nordeste assures that it continues normally financing the shrimp industry.
"We have projects approved and other pending procedures this year in Rio Grande do Norte," stated Vansueldo Fernandes, business executive manager of the bank entity.
"The sector priority process is missing. Investments in the state by entrepreneurs are few, but they still resist. There is business interest, but there is no support," Rocha stressed.
