Shrimp producers ask Minister of Agriculture to veto imports from Ecuador
(BRAZIL, 5/10/2017)
The Brazilian Association of Shrimp Breeders (ABCC) sent a document to the Ministry of Agriculture requesting that Minister Blairo Maggi revoke the decision to open the Brazilian market to shrimp imports from Ecuador.
In the note, the ABCC reiterates its concern about the sanitary aspect and recalls that 34 diseases or viral strains that have already been identified are affecting the global shrimp industry.
The organization stresses that since there is no cure for these diseases, prevention is a priority for the sector dedicated to the crustacean capture in Brazil, which includes not only shrimp but also crabs and lobsters, reported newspaper Metro Jornal São Paulo.
Brazil has already registered four types of shrimp diseases, including the white spot, which caused a sharp drop in harvests. And the ABCC stresses that Ecuador has ten types of diseases, seven of which have never been registered in the country.
In the opinion of the shrimp producer organization, opening up the market entails the risk of new diseases that alter production and lead to a further loss of products.
The sector stresses that although these diseases pose no risk to human health, they can cause high mortality in shrimp in captivity, which is harmful to producers.
The directors of the association threaten to go to court to have the measure cancelled.
