Fishing guild celebrates jack mackerel quota increase agreed by SPRFMO
(CHILE, 2/8/2018)
The 6th Annual Meeting of the Commission of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO) concluded with positive results for the Chilean fishing sector, in particular for the center-south of Chile.
The meeting, held in Lima, was attended by representatives of the 15 member countries of the organization, from Asia, Europe, America and Oceania, including Chile.
The president of the Asociación de Industriales Pesqueros (ASIPES), Macarena Cepeda Godoy, stressed that the Chilean delegation was the largest, which highlights the importance for this country of straddling and offshore marine species, and in particular the jack mackerel
"The quota for 2018 was proposed by the Scientific and Technical Committee of the SPRFMO in Shanghai in September 2017, raising 576,000 tonnes, equivalent to a 16.8 percent increase with respect to the 2017 annual global quota of the SPRFMO. Of that quota, 64.5 percent corresponds to Chile (371,500 tonnes for 2018)," said the executive after arriving in Concepcion.
The most important thing, according to the president of ASIPES, is that conservation measures, scientific guidance in decision-making and a precautionary approach of the members of this international body have begun to bear fruit for the recovery of jack mackerel.
"If we review the catch information, 2011 Chile captured 249,295 tonnes and today after six years, the country will capture 122,000 more tonnes, as a result of that global recovery," she said.
The jack mackerel is very important for the ASIPES partner companies, which mostly operate in the communes of Lota, Coronel and Talcahuano, since of the annual national global quota of jack mackerel, 72 percent corresponds to the center-south zone.
Regarding the giant squid, Cepeda said that the agreement within the SPRFMO is to improve research on this resource, raise more information about the reproductive process and stock assessment. In May there will be a meeting of the Scientific Committee of the SPRFMO in Chile and there will be new and relevant information, she concluded.
