Rizhao has formally targeted annual salmon production of 50,000 tonnes by 2030 as the Chinese coastal city moves to build an integrated industry spanning hatcheries, offshore farming, processing, feed, vaccines and cold-chain logistics.

The new policy sets a target of 10 million juveniles of annual hatchery capacity alongside direct salmon industry output of RMB 5 billion (€650 million) and total value across the supply chain exceeding RMB 20 billion (€2.6 billion) by the end of the decade.

The plan, issued by the Rizhao municipal government on September 4, calls for an integrated production system linking land-based facilities, nearshore farms and deep-sea cages, with cage farming expected to remain the principal production method.

The Icelandic government is preparing to submit a parliamentary bill within the next few weeks setting up a legal framework for offshore aquaculture.

It is understood the legislation will be focused on ocean farming, which is farming in areas that are both outside the areas according to Article 6 of the current Act on Aquaculture.

However, it is likely to be some years before there is any meaningful investment. Norway, which is at a far more advanced stage, has yet to get properly off the ground.

Four new Scottish salmon products have been introduced by retailer Marks and Spencer as part of move to reinvent its M&S Food stores and online store Ocado as places to do the weekly family shop

The roast-in-the-bag Scottish salmon fillet, Scottish salmon fillets with a spicy and sticky glaze, and Scottish salmon parcels filled with a creamy cheese and spinach centre are among 30 new fish products. There is also a fish pie en croute containing smoked haddock and Scottish salmon

M&S Food is also offering two basa (catfish) products, Alaskan black cod (sablefish), Alaskan sockeye salmon, cod mornay (unspecified origin), hake (South East Atlantic), Honduran king prawns, Madagascan prawns, Icelandic haddock products, Icelandic redfish, and Mediterranean sea bass products.

Indonesia proposed strengthening cooperation with China in smart aquaculture, offshore production, genetics, and digitalization during the Global Ocean Development Forum held in Qingdao.

The proposal was presented by Rokhmin Dahuri, president of the Indonesian Aquaculture Society and member of the Indonesian Parliament, who identified several areas where both countries could develop collaboration: joint research, seed production, digital monitoring, biotechnology, cold chain, and marine aquaculture technologies.

Dahuri also presented a bay-scale marine ranching model integrating habitat restoration, breeding zones, restocking, mariculture, and economic activities for coastal communities. According to his approach, technologies developed in China should be adapted to the tropical ecological and productive conditions of Indonesia.

The proposal comes at a time when China is expanding the development of offshore aquaculture systems, sensors, automation, and digital management platforms—technologies that Indonesia considers of interest to modernize part of its aquaculture production.
