Fish farming by-products have the potential to increase the sustainability of aquaculture and contribute to other sectors such as food, diet supplements, animal feed and cosmetics, according to a new study.
Researchers from the University of Stirling’s Institute of Aquaculture found by-products, such as fish heads, frames, trimmings, skin and organs, are an underused resource that could be used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and even clothing.

The season has set an all-time catch record: 185,233 tonnes in Chubut ports managed by Puerto Madryn.
According to this year's shrimp catch report released by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries, Conarpesa—a partner of the Galician company Wofco—leads the rankings for landings. Eight of the top 12 spots are held by Galician companies: the aforementioned Conarpesa, Iberconsa, and Pesquera Deseado (in which Profand holds a stake).
Conarpesa’s freezer trawler *Don Juan Álvarez* took the top spot, landing 1,952 tonnes. It was followed by the *Patagonia Queen*—owned by the US-based Red Chamber—with 1,797.5 tonnes, and Iberconsa’s *API XII* with 1,536.2 tonnes.

On September 22, the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP) and the Chilean Safety Association (ACHS) formalized a strategic collaboration agreement to consolidate preventive management and promote safe and healthy work environments in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS).
During the meeting, the Executive Director of IFOP, Luis Parot, along with Risk Prevention Manager Carlos Rodríguez and ACHS Risk Prevention Expert Álvaro Sanhueza, reviewed the progress made through joint efforts in 2026 and outlined key priorities and challenges for the 2026-2027 period.
This alliance will reinforce IFOP’s preventive capabilities and directly address safety across its scientific, technical, and operational activities, covering both onshore facilities and field research operations aboard vessels.
The impact of the rising tide of data and the growing role of AI in its interpretation came under the spotlight at the first ever Aquaculture – Driving Sustainable Growth Conference at IceFish 2026.
In the opening afternoon session at the debut event, a series of expert speakers gave their views on AI’s impact of the sector, with a broad agreement that the sheer quantity of data was not an issue, though its assessment, determination of its meaning and resulting action remained a challenge.
EquaFish offered an improved operational culture where data was readily available in a useful manner to those who needed it.
When The Fish Site first interviewed Benjamin Orishaba in 2022, he was managing tilapia hatcheries in Côte d’Ivoire while developing his aquaculture consultancy. Four years later, he is working in a large-scale intensive Nile tilapia production facility in Kenya and has completed an MSc in Sustainable Aquaculture at the University of St Andrews. His experience across Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire and Kenya gives him a perspective on how different production models are developing across African aquaculture.
Working with an intensive production system in one of Africa’s largest commercial RAS hatchery operations has taught me what happens when aquaculture moves from managing thousands of fish to managing millions.
What is particularly important to me is making this accessible to African businesses.

The aquaculture and fisheries sector of Los Lagos has gained new commercial opportunities in North Asia. Companies such as Aqua Chile, Maroa Foods, and Sudmaris joined a delegation organized by ProChile—comprising over 30 domestic firms—aimed at strengthening trade ties and expanding their presence in three strategic markets: South Korea, Japan, and Taipei.
The Chile–North Asia Business Meeting, held in Seoul from September 7 to 9, featured a business matchmaking session with 80 importers and projected nearly 450 business meetings, alongside activities designed to explore consumer trends and promote Chilean food products.

Norway set a new record for salmon exports last week, shipping 43,800 tonnes (round weight) abroad and beating the previous record set in mid-August by 245 tonnes.
The volume was 22.3% higher than in the same week in 2025.Despite the all-time high export volume, the spot price of Norwegian salmon increased last week, albeit by just NOK 0.19 (£0.015) per kilo to NOK 65.94 (£5.18) per kilo.

KKP acts to protect local shrimp farmers and prevent unauthorized domestic sales
Indonesia’s KKP secured 1,048 tons of shrimp from Canada, Argentina and Ecuador in East Java, suspected of being diverted to the local market. The cargo includes 885 tons of Argentine red shrimp, 144 tons of Ecuadorian vannamei and 19 tons of Canadian pink shrimp. Quality and traceability checks are underway.
New scheme targets energy, water use and grid integration
The European Commission proposed a common EU rating for data centres above 500 kW, assessing energy and water efficiency, clean power, flexibility and waste-heat reuse. First labels are expected in 2027, as EU data-centre electricity demand could reach 114 TWh by 2030.
Cermaq Canada compliance and sustainability director Stephanie Synard-McInnis has been elected president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Aquaculture Industry Association.
Synard-McInnis succeeds Ocean Trout Canada’s Sheldon George following the association’s annual general meeting, held during the Cold Harvest & Aquaculture Canada conference in St. John’s.
Skretting Canada technical sales adviser Ben Normand was elected vice president.

Fish farmers and the companies providing support services to them are highly cost-conscious – even more so when profit margins are tight. Even so, they are continuing to make big capital investments in new and upgraded vessels.
To take a few recent examples; in August Mowi Norway took delivery of a new hybrid workboat from Damen Folla, a single-hull aluminium vessel with a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system; in the same month, shipbuilder Grovfjord Mek Verksted 2.0 of Norway and the Shetland-based company Ocean Farm Services signed a contract for the construction of a new service catamaran, which will be part of Ocean Farm Services’ operations in the Scottish aquaculture industry with a particular focus on cleaning nets; and the big aquaculture vessel operator, Frøy, has ordered two new wellboats from China.
