SPAIN
Tuesday, October 07, 2025

Three decades after the publication of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCPR) in 1995, the catch of fishery products remains stable, while aquaculture grows year after year. This was confirmed by Manuel Barange, Assistant Director-General and Director of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Division, after the opening of the 13th FAO-Conxemar-MAPA Congress. The FAO 2025 Review of the State of Global Marine Fisheries Resources (based on 2021 data), which assesses the biological sustainability of 2,570 fish stocks, finds that 64.5% of all fish stocks are exploited within the limits of biological sustainability, while 35.5% of stocks are classified as overexploited.

Other Media | fishfarmingexpert: ‘Tough year’ for Mowi Canada East continues with another big loss in Newfoundland

CANADA
Tuesday, October 07, 2025

Mowi Canada East has blamed environmental factors for another big mortality event at its farms on the south coast of Newfoundland.

More than 10% of fish died at died at two Mowi farming operations near Chaleur Bay on Newfoundland's south coast

The reason for the mortality was due to repeat sea lice infestations caused by a prolonged period of high-water surface temperatures, no rainfall or freshwater run-off into the fjords and no winds to drive the usual surface currents. These conditions are ideal for sea lice and other small marine animals to flourish.

IN BRIEF - Fishing Tensions Rise: Artisanal Fishermen Erect Barricades Against Chinese Squid Jiggers

CHILE
Tuesday, October 07, 2025

Artisanal fishermen have escalated their protests by setting up barricades in response to the persistent presence of Chinese squid jigging vessels ("poteras") along the Chilean coast.

This action reinforces the national complaints from the fishing union, which accuses the Chinese ships of engaging in the informal (illegal) capture of jumbo squid (jibia) under the pretext of merely "refueling" near the coastline. Chilean fishermen assert that the operation of the Chinese fleet directly threatens their livelihoods and the sustainability of local fishing resources.

IN BRIEF - Fishing Vessel Sinks After Collision: 10 Rescued, Captain Missing

VIET NAM
Tuesday, October 07, 2025

A dramatic maritime accident occurred on the night of October 4 near the Ca Na estuary, when the fishing vessel BD 83019-TS (22.6 m long, 800 HP), captained by Nguyen Tran Ut (born 1976), sank after being struck by the oil tanker MS FAVOR.

The fishing boat, with 11 crew members aboard, was navigating about 17 nautical miles southeast of the Ca Na estuary (Khanh Hoa province) when it was hit by the tanker, which was traveling south to north, at 10:30 PM.

Immediately, the fishing vessel BV 95869-TS, captained by Nguyen Van Tao (born 1989) operating nearby, managed to rescue 10 of the crew members. Tragically, Captain Nguyen Tran Ut remains missing and is presumed to be trapped in the ship's cabin. The rescued crew are currently being transported to the port of Ca Na.

According to reports from the captain of a nearby vessel, the oil tanker MS FAVOR continued its course without stopping to provide aid.

The Gia Lai Border Guard Command is coordinating the search and rescue efforts, contacting six nearby ships to continue the search for the missing captain. Authorities have also issued a request to national agencies (Navy Command, Coast Guard, and Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centers) to mobilize additional resources. Furthermore, they are seeking contact with the Maritime Administration to obtain information about the tanker and coordinate further action.
