Other Media | SeafoodSource: Phillips begins aggressive retail push with host of new products

Friday, October 30, 2020

Like most seafood processors, Baltimore, Maryland-based Phillips Foods was thrown a major curveball at the start of the COVD-19 pandemic.

The company was hit particularly hard by the forced closure and subsequent limitation of service at its seafood restaurants, as well as the curtailment of its business supplying crabmeat and other seafood to the foodservice sector. But Phillips has such a strong retail presence that it has been successful throughout this year, according to Phillips Vice President of Retail Sales and Marketing John Baxter.

IN BRIEF - IFOP will use artificial intelligence to optimize fisheries research

Thursday, December 03, 2020

A modern system, based on artificial intelligence and implemented by the Instituto de Fomento Pesquero, has successfully passed its pilot phase and is expected to enter a trial period in 2021.

The pilot system successfully identified and classified more than 80% of commercially important fish images that were entered into the Artificial Intelligence system.

Jorge Cornejo, Doctor in Marine Sciences and project manager, mentioned that “based on this achievement, it is expected to create an automatic fishing registration program. This program will use images obtained during the fishing and unloading operations of the main fisheries in the south central zone of the country. Given the large amount of image information that is obtained in each fishing operation and the number of fishing vessels in Chile, the proposed program helps to improve the analysis and effective use of this information for research. In this way, the pilot program has managed to classify the target species of the fishery, and in the future it is expected to incorporate the classification of the accompanying fauna. This will make it possible to modernize the management of sampling and data collection for fisheries monitoring studies ”.

This Project was carried out for a year, and is part of the performance agreements that IFOP has with the Corporation for the Promotion of Production CORFO. IFOP workers Jorge Cornejo (head of IFOP Talcahuano), Judith Castillo, Guillermo Bendel, Aldo Poblete and Enrique Fernández, external advisor on artificial intelligence, participated in the project.

Other Media | La Voz de Galicia: The changes in commercialization, the good that the covid has brought to fishing

Thursday, December 03, 2020

The coronavirus pandemic has turned the economy of the productive sectors upside down. One of the most affected and harmed groups has been fishing. Hundreds of sailors and shellfishmen had to go out to fish without having any type of protection and with the dismay of seeing that in the first moments of confinement the price of their product fell dramatically. Even so, the Galician fleet remained afloat. After nine months of shocks, La Voz de Galicia organized a discussion forum in the Ribeira fish market to take the pulse of the Galician fishing sector, entitled Weaknesses and strengths in the face of covid-19. Opportunities for improvement in the marketing of seafood.

Other Media | Industrias Pesqueras: European Shipowners celebrate that seafarers are 'essential' for the UN and call for 'pri vaccination

Thursday, December 03, 2020

ECSA, the European Community Shipowners' Associations, has celebrated the recent UN resolution, by which seafarers are considered "essential workers" - a demand on the table since last March after the outbreak of the pandemic - and has also supported the request of the International Maritime Organization for a "priority vaccination" to this professional group that encompasses different sectors.

In its opinion, the UN calls on all countries to designate seafarers and other maritime workers as key workers with the aim of implementing the relevant measures to allow seafarers to be repatriated and to facilitate crew changes, in addition to considering the priority vaccination of seafarers.

Other Media | fishfarmingexpert: Huon loses up to 130,000 fish in second escape in 9 days

Thursday, December 03, 2020

Between 120,000 and 130,000 salmon have escaped from a cage at a farm run by Tasmanian salmon farmer Huon Aquaculture.

The escape of the fish, which have an average weight of 550 grams, resulted from a long tear in a net and is the second escape fish loss in the space of nine days for Huon.

Last week it announced that between 50,000 and 52,000 fish with an average weight of 4kg had escaped after a fire on a pen at its Zuidpool lease in the D’Entrecasteaux Channel melted the infrastructure above and just below the waterline.

Thursday, December 03, 2020

Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), Ireland’s seafood development agency, has developed a new mobile fish holding unit which enables survivability experiments close to the action in the fishing grounds.

The unit, supported by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, comprises a 40 foot refrigerated reefer with fish holding tanks hooked up to a water-recirculation system.

BIM conducted a full survivability experiment on seine-caught plaice in collaboration with the crew of the MFV Róise Catríona and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology whereby the vessel caught and stored 145 plaice in fish bins with a flow-through of sea water.

Other Media | La Voz de Galicia: Mané Calvo left the presidency of Anfaco after encountering resistance to the renewal of the management bodies

Thursday, December 03, 2020

He transfers his loyal support to Iván Alonso, who has taken over

Personal issues were not the reason for the resignation of Mané Calvo, CEO of Grupo Calvo, as president of the Anfaco-Cecopesca canning association. The real reason is that the organization was resisting the changes in the management bodies that he proposed and that he had announced before being elected.
"I took over from the previous president with the firm intention of promoting, facilitating and taking profound and determined steps to bring to fruition an urgent and necessary renewal within the management bodies of Anfaco-Cecopesca," the Galician businessman said yesterday.

Other Media | SeafoodSource: New tool tracks progress of fishery management worldwide

Wednesday, December 02, 2020

A new tool has been released in order to provide an evidence-based diagnostic tool for analyzing how a country’s fisheries management system is performing.

The Fisheries Governance Tool allows anyone using it – from fishery managers to funders, investors, and key stakeholders – to get a comprehensive look at how well a country’s a fisheries management system is doing. The tool allows users to track progress against sustainability goals, identify gaps, and more.

“Healthy fish are the key to healthy oceans. It’s important for fishery managers and fishers to both understand what the baseline is in their fisheries, and then get clear on what they are trying to achieve,” Walton Family Foundation Environment Program Director Moira Mcdonald said. “This tool helps them do that, so that they will continue to have healthy fish populations and healthy seafood businesses.”
