Despite setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and increasing competition from Ecuador, Asia’s top shrimp exporting nations should expect continued growth, according to a top shrimp market analyst.
Willem van der Pijl, who founded the Seafood Trade Intelligence Portal (STIP) in 2013, formed Shrimp Insights, a consultancy aimed at the shrimp sector, in June 2020. He recently published a series of blogs on his site looking deeper into the shrimp industry in India, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
India, the world’s top shrimp exporter, had a difficult year in 2020, with production and export performance severely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. The South Asia nation is estimated to have produced between 650,000 and 700,000 metric tons (MT) of shrimp last year, down from 780,000 to 800,000 MT in 2019.

More than 150 farms in England have been caught illegally taking too much water from rivers, lakes and underground sources, a BBC analysis reveals.
Since mid-2022 there have been nearly 200 breaches of permits allowing farmers to use water from local sources, according to Environment Agency data obtained through a freedom of information request.
Of these incidents, 141 threatened environmental damage - but just one farmer has been prosecuted.
The Environment Agency said in response that it carried out 3,000 licence inspections each year, with prosecution a "last option for persistent offenders".

The Portonovo boat was "caught" in O Grove with 600 kilos more than permitted.
The Sea condemns these practices and warns of the risk to the sector.
A financial penalty of €9,671 for the shipowner, the confiscation of the seized product, and the three-month suspension of the operating permit to fish with an octopus pot on his 9.5-meter-long boat, built of polyester in 2011 and registered in Portonovo (Sanxenxo).
This is the proposed penalty for J.F.A.F. and his boat, filed by the Regional Ministry of the Sea in connection with the events that occurred on the 3rd in Porto Meloxo (O Grove), just 48 hours after the octopus campaign began in Galicia.

Shaurya Agarwal, co-founder of Blue Wave Aquaculture, aims to not only bring quality RAS-produced rainbow trout to discerning Indian consumers, but also provide a model to catalyse a new industry in his homeland.
According to Agarwal, there’s a significant demand for trout in India but consumers face a fairly unpalatable choice – they can either opt for domestically-grown fish that aren’t always produced to a high standard, or rely on expensive alternatives that have been imported from Norway and Denmark.
It’s a situation that Blue Wave aims to capitalise on – by producing premium trout products in India at a significantly lower cost. Indeed, according to Agarwal, while the industry average for producing trout via RAS globally hovers around $26 per kg, Blue Wave’s production costs should be $10 per kg less, thanks to lower labour, transport and energy costs.
