Surfers protest over Petuna fish farm proposal

"Surf, not salmon" was the message from Coasters on the weekend, as concerned residents took part in an anti-fish farm paddle out at Stanley.
The protest was particularly targeted at towards Petuna's proposed North-West salmon farm plans, which have been brought under extra scrutiny following the release of Tasmanian author Richard Flanagan's recent book Toxic.

Petuna has previously stressed that works are still years away, and extensive community and environmental consultation will occur.
Salmon fishers in British Columbia are considering alternatives amidst multiple challenges to annual fish stocks.
Circular Head resident and regular surfer Philip Brown said you only had to look towards events at Macqaurie Harbour and Rowella to understand his opposition to in-shore farming.
Greens senator Peter Whish-Wilson, who was a speaker at the event, said it was time for the government to listen.
"This is a chance for (the government) to understand that the community is angry about this and they demand better," Mr Whish-Wilson said.
He said while this is an issue that has been ongoing in Tasmania for years, he believed opposition was now coming from new, and more, corners of the state.
In a previous statement, a spokesperson for Petuna Aquaculture said "at the moment the area we're looking at is 12 kilometres from the nearest shoreline."
"But nothing's decided yet. We won't go ahead without extensive community consultation and extensive environmental monitoring."
Petuna chief executive Ruben Alvarez also previously said if it went ahead, the salmon farm represents an investment of $100m to $150m and, once completed, would provide 100 jobs at Circular Head. (continues...)
