Mowi Sets Ambitious 2030 Targets for Sustainable Salmon Farming
(WORLDWIDE, 10/13/2025)
Seafood Giant Prioritizes Global Standards, Zero Waste, and Water Efficiency in New Strategy
Global seafood producer, Mowi, has unveiled a comprehensive sustainability strategy aimed at minimizing its environmental impact and ensuring the future-proofing of its business. The strategy aligns the company's commitments with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and focuses on stringent third-party certification, waste reduction, freshwater stewardship, and responsible feed practices.
Achieving 100% Sustainable Certification
Mowi has made third-party certification a cornerstone of its strategy. The company has already achieved its target of having 100% of its yearly harvest volumes certified with a Global Seafood Sustainability Initiative (GSSI)-recognised standard, such as the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). The ASC, an independent not-for-profit organization, manages the global standards for responsible and sustainable aquaculture, and Mowi continues to be a leader in its adoption.
Zero Solid Waste to Landfill by 2030
Addressing the growing global concern about waste, Mowi is promoting a circular economy approach by reducing waste and utilizing it as a resource. The company has set a bold target to achieve zero solid waste to landfill by 2030. This applies to waste generated from Mowi’s direct operations, including its feed, freshwater farming, and processing plants. Additionally, the company aims to have 100% of offcuts from its processing plants up-cycled into new products.
Enhancing Freshwater Stewardship
Freshwater is a vital resource for Mowi’s operations, used for both farming Atlantic salmon and maintaining high hygiene standards at its processing plants. While the majority of freshwater is currently used in areas with no water scarcity for the initial life stages of the salmon, the new strategy emphasizes efficiency. By 2030, Mowi aims to achieve a 10% reduction in water intensity (m3/tonne of fish processed) at its processing plants located in high overall water risk areas.

Commitment to Responsible Feed Practices
A key component of the strategy is the sustainable sourcing of feed raw materials to reduce supply chain risk and volatility. Mowi aims for full traceability, adherence to sustainable sourcing credentials, and a reduction in the climate footprint of feed. By 2030, its ambitious targets include:
-
100% of feed raw materials are traceable.
-
100% of marine raw materials are certified.
-
100% of soy and palm oil are certified.
-
An inclusion of 10-15% ingredients from emerging feed raw materials.
-
Achieving a lower Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) and a lower carbon footprint of feed raw materials.

Mowi acknowledges that its 2030 targets are ambitious, but states it is working tirelessly to deliver on them, expanding global access to healthy and environmentally-friendly food from the ocean.
