The logistics industry is evolving rapidly, influenced by a multitude of trends.

Maersk's Logistics Trend Map Identifies Top Ten Disruptors Shaping Global Supply Chains

  (DENMARK, 4/4/2025)

Copenhagen – Global businesses are currently navigating unprecedented levels of unpredictability, facing challenges such as tariffs, political tensions, conflicts, inflation, recession risks, and evolving consumer behavior, alongside underlying issues like digitization and AI.

To assist businesses in this complex environment, Maersk has released its Logistics Trend Map, a comprehensive analysis of the most relevant trends and game-changers impacting future supply chain management.

Source: Survey among 570 global logistics decision-makers across various industries conducted by Statista on behalf of Maersk (Q4/2024)

The report leverages extensive data analysis by partner Statista, expert interviews, and insights from over 500 logistics industry leaders. AI-driven analytics were used to explore scientific studies, patents, earnings calls, and startup activities to identify key trends. The trends were then positioned on the Trend Map based on their relevance and industry adoption.

From an initial list of 30 areas, the Logistics Trend Map delves into the ten most critical topics, including Supply Chain Visibility, Internet of Things, Supply Chain Diversification, Financial Resilience, Circular Economy, AI, Cybersecurity, and innovations in E-Commerce and Last-Mile Delivery.

The impact of these ten top-rated topics varies significantly across geographical regions and eight industry verticals: retail, automotive, chemicals, pharmaceuticals & healthcare, lifestyle & fashion, perishables, technology, and FMCG. Filtering the topics by region and industry reveals notable insights. For example, in retail, 53% of decision-makers identified reverse logistics/return handling as their most pressing challenge, citing its complexity. This surpasses geopolitical disruptions, which were cited by only 38% of retail respondents (compared to 59% in fashion & lifestyle and pharmaceuticals & healthcare).

"In today's increasingly complex and challenging world, logistics agility is paramount. The focus has shifted from avoiding disruptions to effectively navigating them. Understanding and analyzing key trends enables businesses to maintain competitiveness in a dynamic industry," stated Karsten Kildahl, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) at Maersk.

The Logistics Trend Map also provides actionable insights on leveraging these trends to address challenges and capitalize on growth opportunities.

The interactive Logistics Trend Map, filterable by theme, industry, and region, is available [here](insert link). The full 70-page report can be downloaded [here]
