Argentine shrimp rejection in China worries exporters

The news that several shipments of Argentine shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) were rejected by Chinese authorities, according to the agricultural counselor of the Argentine Embassy in the People's Republic of China to the National Health and Food Quality Service (SENASA), has raised concerns in the fishing industry.

Although no official information was released about the reasons behind such rejections, entrepreneurs from the sector indicated they should be due to the detection of concentrations of sodium metabisulfite that are higher than permitted, reported Revista Puerto.

Industry sources explained that the various provinces of China set their own levels of tolerance. And while the Chinese authorities responded to the request of the Argentine government and adapted the 100 ppm metabisulfite level implemented by the other countries, apparently not all agencies of the Asian country have been notified.

Given this situation, SENASA cancelled the sanitary certification of new shipments until the problem is solved.

According to Revista Puerto, SENASA authorities have asked companies to report the number of containers found in transit and estimated arrival dates, and they have suggested managing the diversion of the shipments that are in transit or retained towards Hong Kong or other neighbouring country.

In the first seven months of this year, Argentina exported a total of 52,776 tonnes which generated nearly USD 337 million in revenue. These figures represent an increase of 38 per cent in terms of volume and 25.6 per cent in value.
