Argenova ask for a tagging plan for patagonian toothfish
(ARGENTINA, 11/5/2021)
The firm Argenova has requested that a plan to tagg the species be put into operation with the longline vessel owned by the company, in the northern sector at the height of the Slope to increase the level of knowledge about the fishery.
Argenova's legal representative, Mauro Zamboni, presented a note to the Federal Fisheries Council, requesting approval of a plan for tagging toothfish specimens, which will be carried out with the longliner Argenova XIV, in order to gather information regarding the behavior of the species in the northern sector.
The toothfish has a wide distribution in the Argentine Sea, which extends from 37 ° and 56 ° south latitude, on the slope and platform, with the highest concentrations found between the Burwood Bank and the Isla de los Estados and also, secondarily, on the Buenos Aires slope.
"Since the beginning of the fishery, the area of the north slope was visited, almost exclusively, by longline vessels, due to the fact that the topography of the soils makes it difficult to carry out fishing operations with bottom trawls," says the note sent to the CFP and clarifies that said area has been "little or not at all visited by the Argentine fleet for about ten years", so "there is a question of the current yields that could be obtained in that fishing ground."
Zamboni points out that "given the new evidence about the behavior of the species, related to its migratory movements and its reproductive aspects, the need to increase the biological and fishing information of the northern sector is generated."

From Argenova they understand that the "tagging and recapture program was implemented as of 2004 and has provided relevant information", but that, given the withdrawal of the longliners, "the number of tagged specimens and recaptured fish in the northern area is it has been strongly diminished ”.
Argenova has historically used longlines to catch toothfish, but little by little it was moving to the trawl net system, like other companies; However, it maintains one of its boats active with this type of selective fishing gear, the same one that it offers to carry out this tagging plan in collaboration with INIDEP. From the tagging, very useful information could be collected to improve the quality of scientific data, so it is practically a fact that it will have the support of the Institute's Austral Species Program, although the final decision will have to be made by the Council.
