Salmon firm sacks another 400
(CHILE, 5/13/2010)
Half the workforce of
the company Aguas Claras - around 400 workers – of the plant in Calbuco were fired Tuesday as a result of low production lately.
The drop is linked to the shortage of raw material in farming centres brought on by the crisis caused by the infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) virus.
The announcement was made by John Salazar, president of the Salmon Workers Federation in Calbuco.
According to the president of the Aguas Claras union, Mauricio Navarrete, the chances of the unemployed workers finding a new job in Calbuco are slim.
The workers representatives expressed hope for a quick solution to the problems of mass layoffs. Otherwise, they do not discard carrying out mobilisations.
Salazar noted that company has dismissed 1,100 employees since the start of 2010, Bio-Bio Radio reports.
The union leaders also asked for the intervention of House Representative Patricio Vallespin.
The legislator asked salmon firm executives not to continue dismissing personnel, taking into account the “complicated time for the country.”
"When the crisis passes, I ask the salmon farming executives that they rehire these workers, that they not abandon them," Vallespin said.
Meanwhile, Johana Diaz, secretary of the union, noted that as recently as two months ago the Aguas Claras manager said that there would be no more layoffs.
“But now they dismiss us because the salmon firm has a drop in production and is in a bad financial state,” Cronica Libre reports.
In mid-April, one of the sector's firms, Invertec Seafood SA, located in the municipality of Castro, announced the lay off of more than 100 employees.
According to Claudia Gomez, president of the salmon firm’s union Unity and Strength, 175 workers were dismissed at the time with another 250 employees expected to follow suit at the end of that month.
