Environmentally friendly fish farmer Verlasso has partnered with New York-based producer and distributor of smoked fish Acme Smoked Fish Corporation. Verlasso Smoked Salmon will be available in November for the first time ever for across the country in a variety of sizes under Acme's premium, all-natural Blue Hill Bay(R) Smoked Seafood brand.
Verlasso already offers fresh salmon to retailers and restaurants through regional distributor partners and direct-to-retail partnerships across the country.
"We're proud to offer this new value-added option in sustainable smoked salmon to our retailers and food service industry partners who are interested in premium selections that take environmental impact into consideration," said Gabriel Viteri, VP of strategy and business development for Acme. "The Verlasso salmon is naturally cured and smoked with Blue Hill Bay's time-tested techniques to offer a premium, all-natural smoked salmon that is certain to delight the toughest critics."
The smoked Verlasso will be sold to grocery stores, delis, gourmet and specialty stores and select catalog and online gourmet retailers. It will come in two sizes: a 3-oz ready-to-eat package and a bulk package that will range from 2-3 lb.
Verlasso’s more sustainable farming method lowers the "fish in, fish out" ratio of the salmon's diet -- the lb of wild-caught feeder fish needed to produce 1 lb of salmon -- from the industry standard of 4:1 for fish oil and fishmeal to 1:1, while retaining healthy levels of omega-3s in the salmon's diet, the company said.
"This partnership will extend our brand beyond fresh Verlasso whole fish and fillets, providing smoked Verlasso salmon for the first time to consumers who care about healthy, sustainably raised salmon that is also delicious and ready-to-eat," said Alfonso Marquez de la Plata, CEO for AquaChile. "Acme Smoked Fish Corporation is one of the most widely respected and recognized smoke houses dedicated to working with premium producers, and we're proud to partner with them to offer Verlasso Smoked Salmon under the Blue Hill Bay brand to retailers and the food service industry."
Last March, Verlasso expanded its presence in the west coast of the US when it introduced its harmoniously raised salmon at Berkeley Bowl, Berkeley, California leading independent, full-service supermarket of natural and organic foods. Verlasso initially launched its direct-to-consumer sales via FreshDirect in New York City in September 2011, and through Zupan's Markets in Portland, Oregon in November 2011.
Berkeley is the third premier market to carry Verlasso salmon.
