Argenova fired all staff of a plant
(ARGENTINA, 4/26/2013)
Argenova, the Argentinean subsidiary of the Spanish group Pescanova, decided to close its plant located in Comodoro Rivadavia and to lay off 40 workers.
This dramatic situation takes place a day after Pescanova was undergoing a creditors’ meeting phase, which was declared by the Court of Pontevedra.
After reviewing the documentation submitted by the multinational firm, the judge hearing the case considered the insolvency situation of the of the multinational Galician firm has been confirmed, and besides, he decided to separate the majority shareholder of the firm, Manuel Fernández de Sousa, from the company chairmanship.
After the dismissal of Argenova staff took place, the workers analyzed the steps to follow, which include holding protests.
According to what was reported by the newspaper El Patagónico, the directors of the company associated the closure to the international crisis and the lack of incentives to continue the activity.
A few days ago, Pescanova admitted that some of its subsidiaries may have "specific problems" because of their "liquidity issues."
Meanwhile, the Union of Workers in the Food Industry (STIA) on Friday presented a note for the Secretariat of Labour of Chubut to urgently intervene.
The idea is that the authority reverses the situation or considers finding a solution for the 40 redundancies performed by Argenova yesterday.
STIA Assistant Secretary Oscar Lapalma questioned the layoffs because he considered that "it is unclear whether the closure also extends to other plants or will only occur in the one located in Comodoro."
A director of Argenova’s ensured Mar&Pesca that the plant closure was due to "the inability to finance an unproductive plant."
"Argenova depends on Pescanova and as our parent company is undergoing a creditors’ meeting phase and has been taken over by a trustee, we are not receiving money. The same issue has arisen in Puerto Deseado, where we have the seat base of our entire fleet," added the executive.
Meanwhile, Chubut Government sources indicated that the Secretary of Labour, Marcial Paz, was trying to assist the workers that had been laid off by giving assurances that all of them will be relocated to other plants of Comodoro.
"They are 40 people; we will reach an agreement with the other companies to be able to relocate them. Besides, I want to make clear that the government will not allow people to be jobless," he claimed.
"Nor will the company be allowed to move a single ship from the country because now the boats are our only guarantee," he added.
