Los Fiordos used 12pc less antibiotics in 2015
(CHILE, 7/12/2016)
The salmon firm Los Fiordos ensures it is reducing the use of antibiotics and anti-worming in its farms through the use of vaccines that strengthen the fish immune system, along with functional diets and breeding programs.
In its second Sustainability Report, the company details that in the case of antibiotic treatments, in 2015 it used 0.51 kilos of active ingredient per produced ton, which means a 12 per cent decrease compared to 2014.
Thus, it considers it is in good position to meet its goal of reducing drug use by 15 per cent for the year 2016.
According to general manager Sady Delgado, although in 2015 there was a complex period for the Chilean salmon industry, Los Fiordos obtained several important advances.
In this regard, it notes that the company achieved ASC certification of 27 per cent of its operating centres, becoming the company with the highest percentage of its certified production under this standard in the world production.
Moreover, its officers encouraged the Recirculation Fish Farming of Pargua, a facility that will allow it to more effectively control the intermediate stage of fish growth among the fish farms and its final stock in the farms.
Another achievement that stands out in the Report is the fact that the facilities of the company consumed 11 per cent of electricity, compared to the previous year.
Moreover, to reduce the environmental impact of the farming centres, the company has implemented rotofilters systems that make it possible to capture the solid waste prior to discharge to the receiving body. It also conducts monthly monitoring of effluent parameters and water quality and benthic fauna studies.
