The fleet of the group PEVASA, which includes vessels operating in the Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean tropical tuna fisheries, was certified by SGS as compliant with this new standard after a rigorous auditing process.
This new standard “Tuna from Responsible Fishing” (known as APR in Spanish) was developed for the purse seine freezer vessels and covers the entire fishing process, from controlling the fishing activity through proper vessel monitoring systems (VMS), licences, voluntary 100% observer coverage, to maritime safety and proper social and sanitary conditions aligned with ILO Convention 188.
The PEVASA group operates with a fleet of 6 modern freezer tuna vessels.
It also covers the implementation of the Code of Good Practices developed by the Spanish fishing fleet along with AZTI.
This standard was developed by AENOR, the Spanish Association for Standardisation, the Spanish Ministry of Fisheries (Secretaria General de Pesca) and the Spanish Organización de Productores de Atuneros Congeladores, this new norm UNE 195006 sets a new world first class standard for responsible tuna fishing, allowing to group all the proven and verified best practices.
At PEVASA bycatch accounts for less than 2% of its total catch.
The recognition granted to PEVASA for its excellency in all the areas is aligned to its commitment with sustainable and responsible tuna fishing and is part of the initiatives to contribute to the consecution of the Sustainable Development Goal 14 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations.
