Supreme Court fines Los Fiordos with USD 2.7 million
(CHILE, 8/10/2017)
The Supreme Court decided to partially accept the fine deduction claims filed by Los Fiordos, a salmon firm belonging to Agrosuper, and implement a total fine for 3,142 UTA (annual tax unit), some CLP 1,757 million (USD 2.7 million).
This ruling was adopted after establishing that the decision of the Third Environmental Court of Valdivia, which reduced a series of sanctions implemented by the National Fisheries Service (SERNAPESCA), violated various rules regulated in the respective environmental rating resolutions (RCA).
It should be recalled that at the end of May 2016, the Third Environmental Tribunal, based in the city of Valdivia (Los Ríos region), halved the sanction filed by the Superintendent of the Environment (SMA) to Los Fiordos in October In 2015, from approximately CLP 2,226 million to CLP 1,071 million (USD 3.4 million - USD 1.6 million), for breaches at 18 company farms located in the Puyuhuapi canal, Aysén region.
The new ruling from Los Fiordos said that they appreciate that part of the statements delivered during the appeal have been taken, but they regretted that "not all the legal statements delivered by the company during this long process have been fully considered.”
"We seek to deepen our commitment to the environment even further as well as in the case of the care of the marine environment in which we operate, taking all actions that ensure the proper compliance with the internal protocols and current legislation," the company expressed in a public statement.
