Ministry of the Environment denounces Marine Harvest for environmental damage
(CHILE, 8/8/2018)
Undersecretary of the Environment Felipe Riesco filed a complaint at the offices of the State Defense Council (CDE) of Puerto Montt for the agency to initiate an investigation and, subsequently, to sue Marine Harvest for environmental damage caused by the salmon escape that occurred in Punta Redonda centre.
"We believe that the situation in the area is serious and generates a significant impact on the environment, that is why we came to the State Defense Council and we present this complaint so that the facts can be investigated. We seek to repair the environmental damage," said Undersecretary Riesco.
The action presented aims to achieve the complete repair of the damaged environment resulting from the salmon escape. According to the legislation, the CDE is the designated body to file a suit for environmental damage.
It should be recalled that during the morning of July 5 there was a salmon escape from Punta Redonda farming centre, located on Huar Island, Calbuco district, belonging to the company Marine Harvest. It is estimated that 500,000 and 800,000 specimens escaped from that centre.
