Marine Harvest and Sernapesca disagree on recaptured escaped salmon number
(CHILE, 9/24/2018)
Marine Harvest claims that it has managed to recapture 27.23 per cent of the salmon that escaped from Punta Redonda farming centre on Huar Island in Calbuco, Los Lagos region. However, the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) maintains that the percentage recovered is much lower, and less than the required 10 per cent.
Around 690,000 fish escaped last July due to an intense frontal system. The company was forced to recover 10 per cent of the salmon until last Friday due to the danger of environmental damage. If this requirement is not complied with, the concession may be lost.
Marine Harvest said in a report delivered to SERNAPESCA that they had recaptured 187,949 fish, a figure questioned by this agency.
According to SERNAPESCA, the numbers obtained by its establishment indicate that only 38,286 salmon have been recaptured, which is equivalent to only 5.54 per cent of the escaped fish.
Given this situation, the company announced through a press release that it will hire the services of an external consultant to make the released figures transparent.
