Calanus finmarchicus. C. finmarchicus is the most abundant animal species on the planet, and the engine of the North Atlantic ecosystem.

Calanus AS Certified by Friend of the Sea

  (NORWAY, 12/14/2020)

Friend of the Sea, one of the leading global certification standards for products and services that respect and protect the marine environment, has certified Calanus AS for harvesting of the zooplankton Calanus finmarchicus and the products derived from this huge marine resource.

Calanus AS can now display the Friend of the Sea eco-friendly label on their omega-3 oil and protein derivates.

Calanus® Oil – The New Lipids from the Arctic, is the natural lipid extract from the small copepod Calanus finmarchicus.

"Harvesting of the world´s marine resources is a response to the public challenges of supplying the global population with marine fatty acids and protein from non-terrestrial sustainable sources", says Dr. Ole Petter Pedersen, Head of Technology and Sustainability in Calanus AS. “This certification demonstrates and verifies that harvesting of zooplankton is done according to internationally accepted sustainability principles and follows a best-practice approach. We strive every day to be on the leading edge of responsibility and to provide world class health from the ocean with our products. The common denominator to all we do and all we are is sustainability.”

C. finmarchicus produces astaxanthin, which gives Calanus® Oil a dark red colour.

“In Calanus AS we offer a value proposition which includes a sustainability promise”, says Head of Sales and Marketing Jan Erik Olsen.

He continues: “Sustainability and traceability is not just a marketing tool for us. We are pioneering the utilization of this vast resource that represents a new and sustainable source of nutrients to the people of the world. We take the responsibility that comes with being the first seriously and we are very proud to lead the way in this development”.

C. finmarchicus is harvested in the pure waters off the coast of Norway.
