A fun new way to eat fish and experience this 'unexpected fish'
Nissui Tests Fish Format Targeting Younger Consumers
(JAPAN, 10/22/2026)
The Japanese company launches an experimental tasting of GYONIPO in Tokyo, a fried surimi snack designed to reduce preparation and consumption friction among younger demographics
Nissui, one of the global seafood industry leaders, has launched a proof of concept in Tokyo to address declining fish consumption among younger demographics. The initiative features a limited free tasting event held from November 5 to 8 at the Harakado commercial complex, located in the Harajuku district.

We've also focused on making it surprisingly easy to make using "fish sausage."
The featured product is GYONIPO, a snack made from approximately one fish sausage cut and deep-fried in the style of French fries. Produced from a whitefish surimi base, this format directly responds to shifting habits in out-of-home food consumption and the growing demand for convenience items.

It looks like a potato, but it's fish inside?! Introducing "GYONIPO," an unexpected fish food. GYONIPO Cooking time: 15 minutes | Energy: 174kcal | Salt: 1.1g
The activation follows the findings of a corporate survey conducted among 2,000 respondents, which revealed that 53.4% of consumers consider their seafood intake insufficient. Age-bracket analysis shows a structural bottleneck among consumers aged 18 to 29: 42% never purchase fish, 46% never cook it at home, and 45.3% stated they would try fish-based options provided they can be eaten conveniently with one hand.

Comparing current and ideal fish consumption frequencies
These metrics confirm that market contraction among youth does not stem solely from a lack of organoleptic or nutritional interest, but rather from the friction associated with traditional purchasing, handling, and cooking methods. Addressing these preparation barriers, Nissui focuses its innovation pipeline on the ready-to-eat finger food segment.

From an industrial and commercial perspective, the GYONIPO pilot creates business opportunities across new surimi processing lines, proprietary processing licenses, and specialized cutting and frying equipment. At present, the Japanese multinational has stated that the event serves strictly as a temporary proof-of-concept test, without confirming a timeline for a nationwide commercial rollout.
