Cargill Canada Achieves Milestone as First to Earn ASC Feed Certification
(CANADA, 12/18/2024)
Cargill’s aquafeed operations in Canada have become the first in the country to achieve certification under the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Feed Standard, a globally recognized benchmark for responsible aquaculture. This milestone underscores Cargill's leadership in sustainability and its commitment to advancing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards within the aquaculture sector.

A First for Canada’s Aquaculture Industry
Achieving the ASC Feed Standard certification required Cargill to meet stringent ESG requirements, conduct extensive supply chain mapping, and pass a comprehensive audit process. With this certification, ASC-certified salmon farms across Canada now have access to locally produced certified feed, bolstering sustainable practices across the aquaculture industry.
"This certification reflects our dedication to advancing sustainability in aquaculture," said Isaac Won Sub Yun, country director and commercial leader for Cargill Canada. "It not only provides our customers with certified feed options but also enhances our preparedness for future regulations. This achievement is a testament to the hard work of our Canadian team and their leadership in sustainability."
A Milestone in Cargill’s Global Sustainability Strategy
This achievement aligns with Cargill’s broader aqua nutrition sustainability goals. Building on Canada’s success, Cargill plans to certify its aquafeed operations in Norway and Chile by early 2025, followed by Scotland, Ecuador, Honduras, Mexico, Indonesia, and Vietnam by October 2025. These efforts support the company's vision to maintain leadership in sustainable feed solutions globally, while helping ASC-certified farms meet their compliance deadlines.
Collaborative Efforts Drive Certification
The certification process required seamless collaboration across Cargill's supply chain management, sustainability, and quality assurance teams. It also involved strengthening relationships with suppliers to ensure alignment with the company’s sustainability objectives.
"By achieving this certification, Cargill is not just supporting its customers but also driving positive change across the aquaculture value chain," said Dave Robb, Cargill Aqua Nutrition Group sustainability lead. "This milestone ensures that our operations and supply chains remain responsible and transparent, meeting the growing demand for sustainable seafood."
Supporting Sustainable Aquaculture
This certification provides Canadian aquaculture businesses with the assurance that Cargill’s feed meets the highest sustainability standards, helping them comply with the ASC’s October 2025 deadline for certified farms. By maintaining compliance with ASC requirements, Cargill reinforces its commitment to promoting responsible aquaculture practices worldwide.
