Sapmer posts slight decline in revenue attributed to change of strategy

  (RÉUNION, 2/8/2016)

Deep-sea fishing operator Sapmer, generated in 2015 a turnover of EUR 87.2 million (USD 97.1 million) representing a slight drop, just 0.5 per cent with respect to income it had obtained in 2014.

The company ascribes this result to the Group's strategy to focus only on the processing of quality products from its tuna fishing activity.

Regarding its fishing revenues, the company based on the island of Reunion, reported an increase of 15 per cent.

Sapmer stressed that although the southern seas fishing activity for Patagonian toothfish and rock lobster was lower, they recorded revenues were higher, at EUR 54.2 million (USD 60.4 million), up by 9 per cent. This was due to an increase in sales price supported by a favourable exchange rate compared to 2014.

Meanwhile, whole tuna sales grew by 34 per cent to EUR 20.7 million (USD 23 million), boosted by higher sales volumes sold as a whole tuna and stable average selling prices.

Although market prices of whole tuna drop further in 2015, this stability in the average price of whole tuna was achieved thanks to the change in the mix of species.

Value enhancing processed tuna sales (loins, steaks, etc.) generated EUR 11.8 million (USD 13.1 million), a 47 per cent decrease yoy. This fall is due to the evolution of the Group’s strategy, which now gives priority to the placement of premium quality processed tuna in the market by premium fish processing.

The rigorous selection of quality resulted in higher production yields and improved quality of the products, leading to a substantial increase in the average selling price.

The company has engaged in a tuna activity improvement plan as from 1 January 2015, which will continue this year.

Sapmer now operates a wholly-owned fleet of four freezer-longliners for Patagonian toothfish, a freezer vessel for rock lobster and five freezer tuna purse seiners for its yellowfin and skipjack tuna fishing activity in the Indian Ocean.
