The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has called for aid to promote and support fishing associations for the year 2023 for a value of 550,000 euros.

Specifically, these subsidies, the call for proposals for which has been published this Thursday in the Official State Gazette (BOE), are intended for national associations to carry out representation activities before the General State Administration, before the European Union and before international institutions.

They may also be requested for specific activities of special interest to the fishing sector, both nationally and internationally, such as the organization and participation in congresses, seminars and assemblies, activities whose purpose is to achieve greater integration of women in the sector. and those aimed at promoting research and technological development.

Ten sailors were traveling on the Vilaboa Uno: only seven have been rescued alive and one is still missing. The sea was calm and the ship was empty of cargo.

Around 04:30 in the morning of May 1, the Vilaboa Uno began to sink suddenly in front of Cabo Mayor, on the coast of Santander. The fishing district of the Cantabrian capital woke up in a state of shock upon hearing the news: the shipwreck had left two dead, one missing person who is still missing 48 hours later, and a person with severe hypothermia.

Ten sailors of different nationalities were traveling on the ship, most of them from Senegal, others from Spain, Ghana and Peru. Around 04:10, the Maritime Rescue Center received a distress call from the fishing vessel that was six miles north of Cabo Mayor.

Upon learning of the situation, the Santander Rescue coordination center mobilized its rescue units and the fishing boats in the area to act quickly and managed to do so in less than an hour. The Siempre Nécora fishing boat rescued seven people, six alive and one deceased. A second fishing boat, Ave Fénix, rescued another of the sailors, also deceased, and a boat, a last crew member, alive, as detailed by the head of the coordination center, Germán Erostarbe, in statements to TVE.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has allocated USD 220 million (EUR 204 million) in fishery disaster relief to the U.S. states of Washington and Alaska for a fishery disaster that took place from 2020 to 2023.

“Fishery disasters have devastating effects on local communities and our blue economy,” U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said. This disaster funding provides much needed assistance to our fishing industry and we will work with the affected communities to begin the difficult work of helping them recover.”

The Ministry of Production of Peru (Produce) has established, through Supreme Decree No. 003-2023-PRODUCE, general provisions to facilitate the development of artisanal fishing, extending the term of validity of fishing permits until the end of year, which will benefit more than 5,000 artisanal fishermen.

The proposal plans to directly benefit more than 900 artisanal fishing vessels, whose operations will be allowed as long as they manage the fishing permit.

Recently, the Chamber of Deputies approved the draft resolution to request the President of the Republic to issue a supreme decree establishing that new concessions in marine protected areas for the salmon farming industry and its derivatives will not be renewed or granted.

On May 11, Chinese Commerce Ministers Wang Wentao and Ecuadorian Julio José Prado signed the China-Ecuador Free Trade Agreement via videoconference on behalf of their respective governments. This free trade agreement is the 20th China has signed with other countries and makes Ecuador China's 27th FTA partner and China's fourth FTA partner in Latin America after Chile, Peru and Costa Rica.

In 2022, trade between China and Ecuador reached $13.1 billion, up 19.7% from the previous year and showing double-digit growth for two consecutive years. China has become the second largest trading partner of Ecuador, which is an important economic and trade partner of China in Latin America, importing agricultural, fisheries, energy and mining products, as well as being an important partner in the Belt and Road Initiative. 

The signing of a free trade agreement between China and Ecuador is a concrete measure to implement "promoting a high level of opening up to the outside world" as proposed by the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). This agreement expands the network of high-level free trade zones for both countries.
