Nissui Group Phasing Out Plastic-Leaking Floats to Reduce Marine Pollution

Nissui Co., Ltd. is eliminating the use of polystyrene floats with nylon covers in its aquaculture facilities, replacing them with alternatives that significantly reduce the risk of plastic leakage into the ocean.
This initiative is part of the company's commitment to addressing marine plastic pollution, as outlined in the "Nissui Group Basic Policy on Plastic Issues" (established in 2020). The transition to the new floats is scheduled for completion by the end of March 2025.
Traditionally, polystyrene floats encased in nylon covers have been commonly used in marine aquaculture. However, the nylon covers are prone to damage, leading to the fragmentation and leakage of the polystyrene core, a major contributor to marine plastic pollution.

The Nissui Group's aquaculture operations include salmon farming overseas and yellowtail, salmon, and bluefin tuna farming in Japan. A 2019 survey identified a total of 19,540 floats across the group's aquaculture sites. In response, Nissui set a goal to eliminate nylon-covered polystyrene floats by the end of March 2025 and replace them with more environmentally sound options, such as PE-coated polystyrene foam floats and hollow resin floats, which minimize the risk of plastic leakage.
The "Nissui Group Basic Policy on Plastic Issues" (established in February 2020) emphasizes the prevention of microplastic and ghost gear generation through the review of plastic materials in fishing gear and stringent management practices in fishing and aquaculture. This aligns with the company's medium-term management plan "GOOD FOODS Recipe 1" (FY2022-2024), which includes the objective of complete replacement of problematic floats.
Nissui's commitment to environmental stewardship is further underscored by its "Declaration of Conduct for Sustainability," which prioritizes "reducing environmental impact and preserving the natural environment and biodiversity." The company has identified "mainstreaming marine biodiversity" and "contributing to a decarbonized, recycling-oriented society" as key materiality issues driving its sustainability efforts across all business segments.
